Competition in public services
Government monopolies are not justified in the Digital Age. The age of citizen Choice is upon us!
WAIT NO MORE for urgently-needed Medical Procedures!
Wait lists for medical procedures is a problem that has dogged our public health care sector for as long as I can remember. The Ontario Libertarian Party advocates for Non-Government Options to enter the market and complete with government-run Health Care services which suffer from the well-known problems that are common to all monopolies.
In the private, for-profit sectors, anti-trust laws have existed for a century to break up monopoly enterprises. These laws don’t apply to government monopolies however. Why does this double standard prevail?
Libertarians offer a better way
Antitrust laws are used to break up monopolies in order to increase competition. The expected benefits are: better customer service; a greater range of consumer product and services options; competitive pricing; and more innovative business models designed to improve the overall “customer experience”.
The Ontario Libertarian Party is advocating for a Non-Government Options model of competition which will enables independent service providers to complete and co-exist with government service providers. For this to succeed as envisioned, all legislation that currently exists to enable government monopolies must be repealed in order that all market participants compete on a level playing field. In addition, every citizen will be permitted the right to choose to patronize their choice between governments and non-government service providers, and pay accordingly for their choice.
Note that the Non-Government Options plan IS NOT PRIVATIZATION. No government service will be intentionally closed, but every service provider will be expected to complete for patrons if it wishes to remain viable.
The rationale is sound
In minimally-regulated economic sectors, competition keeps all market participants focused on meeting the needs of customers in a timely, convenient and cost-effective manner. A healthy dose of competition in the Healthcare sector is just the remedy we need to bring out the best in Health Care for everyone.
Clearpoint Health is one example of a Non-Government Options service provider.
The linked web site reveals that Clearpoint Health operates several independent surgical centres across Canada. Their services will reduce survical wait lists and improve medical outcomes. Immunoceutica Labs & Technologies is another non-government service provider that recently started up. The appearance of companies like these is a very welcome sign that there is an appetite for Non-Government Options and that politicians must clear the path for more in the future.
Ultimately, Non-Government Options service providers should become commonplace in every sector that governments currently control and where the model can prove superior to government monopolies.
Libertarians stand for Freedom Of Choice in all human affairs.
Freedom of Choice is heart and soul of a truly democratic society. The Non-Government Options model already partially exists in dentistry, eye care, chiropractic, and other domains of personal health, albeit they are too often subject to overly restrictive regulations. We believe this minimally-regulated model can also be extended much further in order to better serve the public in markets where government services have proven to be inadequate, inconvenient or excessively expensive.
Non-Government Options is the best path forward for everyone where personal services are concerned. Vote Libertarian for the political leaders who will walk that path with you.
