EDUCATION as it SHOULD BE
University of Austin TX employs “cancelled” professors to teach “forbidden” topics.
Freedom of Choice in EDUCATION
The Ontario Libertarian Party (libertarian dot on dot ca) promoted its Freedom of Choice election platform in the recent provincial election.
In it, the OLP encouraged voters to re-imagine Education guided by the Charter of Rights And Freedoms which prescribes Canada’s constitutional rules for citizen and government engagement in a truly civil and truly society.
Every other party stood for the status quo. The BORG (blue, orange, red and Green) parties continued to support the existing public Education system. It is run as a province-wide monopoly and employs monopoly labour (union controlled teachers and school staff). It’s massive bureaucracy exerts total control over the curriculum, operating policies, workplace standards, employment processes, and learning schedule for the publicly-funded schools to which students are obligated to attend.
The situation is urgent and calls for many changes immediately
Why do BORG politicians tacitly tolerate the creeping (and creepy) influences of CRT (critical race theory) and other woke ideas into our schools? Why won’t all of the elected BORG politicians act to stop this indoctrination of our children?
Ontario elected 124 MPPs who are now sitting comfortably in their seats at Queens Park. Can I presume that they all have children or family members with children who are currently experiencing life as a student in our public Education system? I would expect that they would vote unanimously to implement the Freedom of Choice plan for education advocated by the Ontario Libertarian Party if they truly believed in the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
America is still the land of opportunity and innovation when compared to Canada.
This is not because Canadians are less capable than Americans. It is because we are more complacent and risk-averse. We have elected governments that have built legislative and regulatory environments that are so convoluted and restrictive that entrepreneurial innovation is usually stymied at the idea stage.
I blame this on every Canadian who has ever voted for BORG politicians who were of the snake oil salesman variety. You know the type. They promise “free” stuff from the government and a utopian society in which “social justice” can be achieved by creating more legislation and red tape. In other words, I blame the gullible among us.
Who are the politically gullible?
When I think of “the politically gullible” people I have encountered in my past, a few caricatures arise in my mind’s eye.
The guy (or gal) who gets his news and information exclusively from CNN, CBC, Twitter, the Toronto Star and the New York Times. He declares himself “well-informed” without knowing that he is drunk of leftist, statist propaganda. Described by others as a “know-it-all”, he is usually a university or college graduate, the product of the public education system and is likely employed in the public sector or a larger financial institution. If engaged in a political discussion, he supports the popular institutional narratives and declares that anyone who is informed by alternative sources is a foolish victim of fake news or conspiracy theories.
The gal who steadfastly refuses to discuss politics. She does so because she is afraid to be ostracized from her social circle if she is seen to be holding opinions that are not “politically correct”. She usually admits that she has little-to-no interest in politics or economics or any related topic, but is also secretly embarrassed by her lack of knowledge in this domain. She will confidently state that everyone has a right and obligation to vote. An “uninformed voter” is rare in her view because everyone has needs and she believes governments exist as benevolent caregivers with unlimited resources with which to provide “free” services to everyone, especially the “less fortunate” members of society. If prompted, she will provide ample anecdotal “evidence” to demonstrate her credentials as a “caring and generous person”.
The activist who it passionate and committed to saving humanity from some existential threat. This zealot believes that it is our individual responsibility to act collectively through our elected representatives and public institutions to mitigate the “threat”. There are many activist causes (climate change, global poverty, etc) and they have spawned many powerful special interest organizations which lobby the political establishments to fund their cause or legislate rules for society to comply with their dreams.
The never-voter who, like the gal above, shuns conversations about politics because he or she has concluded that one vote every 4 years has absolutely no power to prevent the government steamroller from running over them. Some just accept whatever comes and plans to adjust accordingly to the best of their ability and hope to avoid catastrophic circumstances. Some become “preppers” who stockpile food and other survival resources in case Armageddon actually arrives. And still more become Libertarians who seeks political and communitarian approaches to influence change one person at a time within their field of influence.
The linked article showcases an innovative University in Texas
This unique program was established as a Non-Government Option for citizens who no longer trust or value the Government-funded and controlled institutions of “higher learning”.
I have provided the article as an excellent example of the OLP’s concept of Freedom of Choice in which Government and Non-Government Options would co-exists and compete for students and their funding would be earned by choices made by satisfied customers.
It is my hope that these kinds of organizations will pop up everywhere. They will serve to break down the existing political and institutional barriers to free speech. They will succeed only if they abide faithfully to all Charter provisions.
A truly democratic society is only possible if all voices are heard and valued. With that atmosphere of safety and mutual respect, each one of us will be empowered to make our best informed choices from a range of viable options. I see this as a formula for a rich and fulling life with a minimum of unnecessary fear.
