EDUCATION MONOPOLY Harms Student Outcomes
Introduce competition is the only real solution and this can only be achieved by repealing pro-monopoly legislation!
“In this world, you get what you pay for.”― Kurt Vonnegut, Cat's Cradle
Obtaining more value or better results is what you expect with higher prices in the private sector, but this nugget of common wisdom doesn’t hold for public monopolies.
Rising public Education costs without getting better student outcomes is a perennial problem. Teachers’ unions are a big part of it, but the heart of the problem is the lack of school choices for parents.
Monopolies are illegal in the private sector, but …
… monopolies are the standard operating model for public education in Canada. Why does this double standard exist?
Public sector labour also operates as a monopoly within the public Education monopoly. About 75% of all government employees in Ontario belong to a labour union (likely higher in the public Education sector.)
Unions that operate within government organizations exists to serve their customers who, in the Education sector, are the teachers, admin and custodial staff who pay their membership dues. Wages and benefits have risen steadily over time due to union successes while student outcomes have remained flat or declined.
“Money Won’t Fix Our Schools”
Jasmine Moulton, host of Reality Check, delivers this excellent presentation to debunk “leftist claims” which are often advertised and funded by self-serving labour unions. Her “Failing Our Kids ???” video is a ‘must watch’ for anyone with school-age children.
Only A Political Solution Can Fix Our Schools
Jasmine offers the same message for Education in Ontario that has been promoted by the Ontario Libertarian Party (OLP) - the only political party that advocates for Non-Government Options in Education (visit www dot libertarian dot on dot ca).
For decades, parents have complained about our schools but the problems persist. Does this not prove that complaining does nothing to change the status quo?
Public monopolies in Ontario can only be eliminated by repealing the legislation that authorizes them to exist. We can complain about these monopolies “until the cows come home”, but complaining will never remove the offending legislation (along with all of the supporting regulations and enforcement bureaucracies) until voters demand it.
Vote for Excellence in Education
Let’s stop failing our kids. For real and lasting change, always vote for Freedom Of Choice in Education if you are serious about introducing competitive options. Provide choices for parents from which they can choose the best option to educate their kids.
