Freedom and Virtue: Friends or Enemies?
Professor Bruce Pardy asks this important question, “the elephant in the room”, when discussions arise between the Freedom People and the Virtue People. The elephant is the HONEY POT.

I liked this article by Bruce Pardy posted on the Brownstone site
His characterization of Freedom People and Virtue People, while simplistic, captures their essence fairly well.
The authoritarian tendencies of Virtue People is an accurate depiction in my experience. Those folks tend to define “reality”, “creation” and the standards of morality, then expect everyone else to abide by them, by force if necessary.
The Conservative political parties are generally considered the “law & order” advocates. The Liberals, NDP, Green and BQ “progressive” parties are more than generous in spending other people’s money (OPM = tax revenues and public debt) by legislative fiat too. In all cases, the size of the Honey Pot ( all OPM + legislation = the source of all political power) has grown enormously thanks to the named parties and their “OPM addictions”.
Like all serious addictions, going “cold turkey” is not medically advised. A “weening off period” is considered more humane and a structured one is often more effective. When I say that Canada’s #1 problem is that “we have too much government”, I am referring to the OPM addiction experienced by the custodians of the Honey Pot and every Canadian who is dependant on the Honey.
Individual Freedom and Personal Responsibility are principles that point the way to less Honey dependency in our communities. I favour achieving a much smaller Honey Pot over time to ween all Canadians off OPM addiction and dependency.
Do the Freedom People and Virtue People want the same thing, or are they simply fighting for control over an every-growing Honey Pot?
As long as the primary objective of politicians is to get re-elected and the best way to get re-elected is to offer more "honey" to the voters The chances for weening will be slim.
