“Global boiling”?
The only thing that is getting hotter is the fear-mongering rhetoric coming from the United Nations and Climate Alarmists who repeat this misinformation in public to justify more “climate action”.
Balderdash.
I attended the City Council meeting for the City of Kawartha Lakes this past Monday. The first Deputation was presented by two representatives the Kawartha Lakes Environmental Advisory Committee. The title of their report was Expansion of Gas Plants in Ontario.
Citing this UN News article, they stated that …
“the age of climate change has ended and the age of climate boiling had begun”.
The audience guffawed loudly in amazement that these two Municipal Committee members would make such an outrageous statement with a straight face.
When critical thinking is outsourced to designated “authorities”.
P.T. Barnham was alleged to have said:
“There is a sucker born every minute”.
This is likely more true today than in the nineteenth century when he became famous as a circus owner.
The Internet has overwhelmed us with far too much information. This has prompted many people to forego their own analysis and critical thinking on topics like Climate Change (and many more) and to “outsource their thinking”to “designated authorities” such as the UN Secretary-General António Guterres. It was this designated authority who announced the era of “global boiling”and to whom the two representatives of the Environmental Advisory Committee referred as a credible source.
Zealots are common.
Like any group which forms around strong convictions, well-informed or otherwise, people who are associated with the Climate Alarmism movement often possess convictions that they will protect fiercely against any challenge. Some of these people run for public office. When they gain public office, they also gain the authority and opportunity to impose their convictions, and even their phobias, onto other citizens.
At the City Council meeting, one Councillor spoke to her well-known and passionate concerns about Climate Change. After a statement of support, justified on her belief in the alleged Climate Crisis, she moved to accept the Deputation presented by the Kawartha Lakes Environmental Advisory Committee representatives for further consideration by Council. The motion, which passed nearly unanimously, assigned to Council the task to deliberate on the future of building more gas-powered energy generation plants within the City at the crucial moment in time that the City is planning for significant population growth in the decade ahead.
Omissions.
I doubt that any of the Climate Skeptics who were present at the City Council meeting would have been critical of the Kawartha Lakes Environmental Advisory Committee deputation if it had included less overt fear-mongering and more details about how our 78,000 CKL residents would avoid further Energy Insecurity.
Cited elsewhere is the fact that other jurisdictions which had committed to past Green Economy proposals are now experiencing rolling energy blackouts and very high energy prices. Why do Green Energy advocates never mention or acknowledge that their policy proposals come with extreme risks?
Energy Security is vital to all Canadians.
Reliable and affordable energy produced by gas-powered plants will remain essential to everyone for the foreseeable future.
Maybe, in some distant future, technological advances will make solar, wind, biofuels and other currently-unreliable energy sources able to meet our growing energy needs safely, reliably and affordably. Until then, those “green energy” sources will be unable to replace our current dependence on fossil fuel energy sources.
Dreams of “Green Energy” in technicolor.
In her statement, the Councillor who favours “green policies” made a vague and feeble reference to nuclear energy as an alternative. She must know that its role in meeting Canada’s future energy needs has already been knee-capped and moth-balled by environmental alarmists and regulators. So, why did she mention it at all?
Councillor Ron Ashmore delivered a knowledgeable, convincing and well-argued statement that caution must be emphasized when Council makes decisions that will affect the future of gas plant expansion, especially when no viable alternatives currently exist in the Green Economy scenario.
Her reputation is well known.
The Councillor who is known for her ardent stance on Climate Change, proclaimed twice to the Council audience that:
“the threat is real”.
She also referred to people who don’t agree with her as “climate deniers” . This term is a well known slur that green energy advocates often use to avoid any respectful discussion on the topic. Her use of that slur in a public Council meeting was unwarranted and unprofessional. During a game of golf two years ago, I learned first hand how quick she was to dismiss any discussion on the topic if it challenges her favoured Climate Crisis narrative.
For the record.
No one denies that fact that the Earth’s climate has always changed, or even that mankind’s activities have an environmental impact.
The typical climate skeptic questions THE EXTENT that humanity’s reliance on burning fossil fuels has produced the alleged crises that Green Economy advocates contend.
Skeptics also question if the enormously expensive and powerful Climate Change Government Complex, which has grown out of decades of alarmists’ claims, is justified. Most of us believe that all government-funded Climate Action is grounded in politics, not genuine science, and we possess the scientific evidence to support our skepticism.
My book, What To Do About Climate Change covers this topic in detail.
Call me naïve.
As a younger man, I had naively hoped that our elected representatives would hear and consider the views of all of their constituents, not just those who shared their ideological, political or religious views.
We are all taxpayers. As such, we are forced to sacrifice significant portions of our earned incomes every year to pay for public services. This must include a fair and respectful representation in the lawmaking processes of City Councils, Legislative Assemblies and Ottawa’s Parliament.
From a young age, we are told that it is our right and privilege to vote for our government representatives. The steady decline of voter turnout since the 1970s tells a different story.
Too many citizens have lost faith in the value of their vote and the legitimacy of “democratic elections” to bring their individual needs, beliefs and priorities to the attention of our lawmakers who are the only people designated by voters who have the power to hold unelected officials employed with public institutions accountable to us.
Municipal elections have the worst voter turnout records. From what I witnessed at the recent City Council meeting, who can blame them for their lack of faith in the system?
