The Evidence is Everywhere But Too Big To See
Episode 285, “How To Make The World A Better Place” on the Jordan B Peterson podcast, features a discussion between three brilliant thinkers - Dr. Jordan Peterson and his guests Bjørn Lomborg and Ralph Schoellhammer. After listening to all of it, my conclusion is:
The greatest threat to the survival of humanity is our governments and the people who lead them.
Time Well Spent
This episode is nearly two hours long - way beyond the attention span of most people trained by the TwitterSphere. However, I find that long form discussions like this one pack in way more value per unit of time than in the equivalent amount of time spent flipping through messages on the likes of Twitter, Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, or any other social media platform of their ilk.
The Invisible Elephant
There was one glaring omission in their discussion. Why was there no mention of reducing the size, cost and scope of authority of all excessively powerful public institutions as one possible remedy? If the goal is to curtail the aggression and harm that public policy and judicial edits are inflicting on the powerless masses, is this not an obvious option for consideration and debate?
As a longtime Less Government Libertarian, I am always amazed when otherwise highly educated people who possess a good understanding of humanity’s challenges never consider rooting out the source of the problems. In this episode, Jordan suggested that the time is perfect for courageous politicians to step forward and promote serious reforms to our institutions - ideas that are too risky for most establishment politicians to introduce into public discourse. .
Big Government is this the “elephant in the room”.
It is sitting on us and our liberties. However, like the Big Banks in the 2008 financial crash that were “too big to fail”, the elephant seems too heavy and ponderous to remove. In other words, the crony matrix of stakeholders within the sphere of political power and money are too big to take on by Establishment Politicians.
The Ontario Libertarian Party has existed for nearly 50 years and had candidates running in every provincial election. In fact, as recently as 2018, the OLP ran 116 candidate for 124 election ridings. Why does Jordan Peterson NOT know this?
An old Elephant Joke:
Question: How do you know when an elephant has been in your refrigerator?
Answer: Footprints in the butter.
I have been wondering the same thing myself Gene. Cognitive dissonance runs deep in Canada. Most Canadians who have been born here and grown up here, don't realize how delicate democracy is. However immigrant Canadians like my husband who fled Cuba know exactly how it starts and that socialism leads to Communism and this has been brewing for some time in Canada. Thanks for another great article!
Did you add a comment (or link to this article) on that episode? If Peterson replies to any of the comments, then this is one way to et his attention.
I think the reason the elephant is invisible in Canada and most 'democratic' countries is because it is mainly undemocratic countries doing the visible killing. Most people believe what their government and MSM is telling them.
