Justin: Defend The CHARTER, Or Else…
A Bloc Ontario and an ONTARIO CHARTER of Rights & Freedoms anyone?
QUEBEC as shown the way forward for Canada!
Quebec has shown the rest of Canada (RoC) how each province can defend its own interests within a nation that features a centralized authoritarian federal government under a rogue Prime Minister with crazy international ambitions. Let’s DECENTRALIZE constitutional powers to Canada’s diverse regions (such as our provinces). A good place to start is with the Charter of Rights & Freedoms.
Consider Quebec’s Advantages
The Bloc Québécois (BQ) is the only federal political party that exists solely to benefit a single province - Quebec with its 8.6 million residents. Every elected BQ politician who takes a seat in Canada’s Parliament does so with the mandate to skew the allocation of federal resources and privileges in favour of Quebec at the expense of all others. Those MPs are elected exclusively by Quebec residents who believe that they deserve those advantages owing to their status as a “nation within a nation”. “Democracy” is not fair or balanced in Canada under this arrangement. If fact, it’s purposefully biased and lopsided!
History tells the story of Quebec’s privileges. In 1982, it’s Premier Rene Levesque was the only provincial leader to decline signing the Canadian Charter of Rights & Freedoms. While still constitutionally accountable to the Charter as a member of Canada’s confederation, many residents of this rogue province have made it clear that the Québécois have never voluntarily submitted to its constitutional authority. Like rebellious and headstrong teenagers, BQ voters have demonstrated their belief that they deserve a special status and privileges for which the RoC must accommodate.
RoC Blocs anyone?
An an Ontario resident who no longer trusts or respects Canada’s national government, I believe that the creation of a federal Bloc Ontario should become a serious discussion among Ontario’s 14.8 million residents. If Quebec can have a BQ in federal politics, why not Ontario, or Alberta or the Maritime provinces? The fact that the BQ exists at all provides the legal precedent the RoC needs to bring balance, respect and trust back to Canadian federalism.
Furthermore, Ottawa has failed all Canadians constitutionally. The recent pandemic has provided ample evidence that political and institutional elites have brazenly overstepped their powers and ignored the our rights as citizens. If Ottawa is unable or unwilling to enforce the Canadian Charter of Rights & Freedoms, then Ontario should take charge of its own version.
The Ontario Libertarian Party (OLP) believes that a new relationship is needed between the People of Ontario and the Ottawa. It’s time to debate the division of powers in Canada. We authored the Ontario Charter of Rights & Freedoms to inspire this discussion amongst our citizens.
Let the discussion begin
If Canada is truly a democratic nation with freedoms of speech, expression, associations, the press and more, then there is nothing (in principle) to stop us from discussing these topics in every home, business and institution across Canada! 📣
However, are there enough Canadians who care about our Constitution to mount a serious defence for its role in protecting democracy? The truckers and their supporters put forth a great fight but how much has changed since then?
The untrustworthy and authoritarian behaviours that we have observed from our ruling elites, their institutions and the corporate media have continued and this fact has shaken my belief in the robustness of Canadian democracy.
Has Canadian democracy perished? Did it die “not with a bang but a whimper”? Did its death begin with the election of Justin Trudeau in 2016?
The Test For Democracy
Shall “we the people” conduct a test to see if democracy still lives in Canada? The proposals described above are certain to threaten the ‘ruling class’. How soon will we see them retaliate with all of the resources under their control to squash our discussion?
