On PRIDE and PREJUDICE
Government Education monopolies kill pride and institutionalize prejudice
I graduated from the University of Waterloo with a B.Sc. in 1975. For decades thereafter, I was proud to be a UofW graduate knowing its top-tier reputation for its faculties of Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering, Optometry and for my faculty - Health Sciences and Kinesiology. Today, none of that pride remains. My alma mater has become an embarrassment for reasons that are showcased in this linked article.
The University of Waterloo is not alone. My youngest daughter, a 2019 B.A.Sc. graduate of the University of Guelph, recalls her studies within the walls of that “institution of higher learning” with disgust. Besides her disappointing academic experience, I consider the treatment of Dr. Byram Bridle over the UofG’s Covid vaccine policies last year to expose the clear and present insanity that afflicts university senior administrators. Dr. Julie Ponesse, the popular Medical Ethics professor at the University of Western Ontario, was also terminated over the same misguided policies. The evidence is unequivocal - the anti-constitutional and authoritarian ‘rule by government fiat’ has increased to dangerous levels in recent years.
Institutionalized Prejudice is the basis of the policies used to terminate the employment of those great doctors and the 49 victims described in the linked article. It has replaced the excellent campus atmosphere of my day - an environment that fostered critical thinking and free expression. Obedience to Authority is now the order of the day. Current public leaders demand it, and are determined to get it backed by force if necessary.
Thomas Jefferson said: “The government you elect is the government you deserve.” As a Libertarian, I have always voted for Less Government. I oppose the ever-increasing size, scope of authority, and cost of government bureaucracies because this inevitably leads to institutionalized forms of fascism that would oppress our rights and freedoms. Today, Crony Capitalism, Crony Socialism and Crony Statism are those dominant forms of fascism.
While I greatly appreciate the university education I received between 1970 and 1975, I want nothing to do with the University of Waterloo today. Occasionally, I receive emails from the UofW which proclaim appreciation for alumni like me while simultaneously extending their tin cup for donations. The Newsletters I also receive are an embarrassment of wokeness. They ardently promote every popular leftist ‘social cause’ from Critical Race Theory to Marxist equity campaigns.
The people employed within the administration of the University of Waterloo are clueless, IMHO. What makes them think that the son of a WW2 Veteran, who risked his life to safeguard Canada from fascist regimes, would ever buy what they are selling today?!
Genuine Democracy demands Freedom of Choice. Education, especially in the Digital Age, is one area of modern life where it no longer makes sense to empower government to be the sole monopoly provider. We see regular evidence of the consequences of bloated public institutions, and it’s not pretty.
The Ontario Libertarian Party offers a release for every student from Education fascism. It requires the execution of a very simple and intuitively-obvious formula. End mandatory taxation for Education. Deregulate the Education “market” to allow entrepreneurial service providers to enter that market and expand consumer choices. The result will be a robust, diverse, innovative and affordable Education market.
Some citizens may still want the option to patronize a government service providers. Let them! Democratically, they must be as free as anyone else to choose the option that they prefer. Of course, with that choice, they must also commit to covering the operating costs of those “public” offerings with “tax” payments. Everyone else must be equally free to choose from many other Education services options and pay on a “fee-for-service” basis as they do now for hair cuts, Uber ride services and online shopping with Fedex delivery.
Freedom of Choice is the essence and soul of genuine democracies. Canadians have allowed that Freedom to slip through their fingers over several decades. While we still have choice at the ballot box, vote Libertarian in every election to grab hold of your remaining Freedoms and never let them go.
