UNFAIR Per Vote Subsidies.
$185 million was the cost of the election but the running costs in PER VOTE SUBSIDIES since the last election cost the taxpayers tens of $millions more.
Results of YOUR TAX DOLLARS!
The 2025 election results were bought and paid for by a government payment scheme that guarantees success for the BORG (blue, orange, red and Green) parties. If Ontario plans to continue subsidizing political parties and their election campaigns, let’s at least try to make them fair and democratic.
Ontario Per Vote Subsidies corrupt elections😯
Today, the major political parties are paid rich subsidies according to a Per Vote Subsidy scheme that was passed into Ontario legislation under Premier Kathleen Wynne when she was in charge of a Liberal majority government.
The proceeds of that subsidy arrangement have financed the BORG parties to the tune of tens of $millions. A few smaller parties got a little bag of taxpayer cash too.
Here’s how it works.
In the last provincial election, each candidate received a promise from the Ontario taxpayer to pay $0.66 per vote per quarter for the next four years (or whenever the next election is called) if he or she earned at least 2% of the total riding vote count.
Let’s do some math.
Here is an estimate of the $value of that promise using round numbers.
Per vote annual amount: $0.66 x 4 quarters = $2.64
Over four years = ~$10 per vote ($2.64 x 4 years)
TABLE to calculate the TOTAL VALUE at $10 each.
Votes Subsidy Ridings* TOTAL**
500 $5,000 1 $5,000
1000 $10,000 10 $100,000
2500 $25,000 30 $750,000
30, 000 $300,000 80 $2,400,000
* Riding candidate gets 2% of the total registered vote count.
** Note that the TOTALS go to the party, not the candidate.
A Better Plan
In my dreams I prefer to abolish all government subsidies and the party system altogether. A modern Digital Direct Democracy is a much better way to democratically serve every citizen.
However, I am a realistic man.
Let’s fix what we have if we can’t get our dreams.
PROBLEMs with the current subsidy arrangement.
It is heavily biased to ensure that only the four major parties will get the attention of the public in every election.
It systematically excludes the voices of the other 19 parties who are legally registered by Elections Ontario to compete in elections.
Given that Ontario’s elected political leaders will want to keep access to this free cash at taxpayer expense, reform is our next best option.
To FIX the PROBLEMS: Modify the per vote subsidy to make it FAIR.
See an example below using the same ~$10 subsidy per vote under three conditions:
Applies ONLY to registered political parties with at least ten election candidates registered.
A candidate must receive minimum of 250 votes or 1% of the riding vote total to qualify.
A $3,000 per riding cap on the amount of subsidy paid by taxpayers would apply.
Revised TABLE to calculate the TOTAL VALUE at $10 each.
Votes Subsidy Ridings* TOTAL
250 $2,500 1 $2,500
1000 $3,000** 10 $30,000
4,000 $3,000** 30 $90,000
30,000 $3,000** 80 $240,000***
*** Note that the TOTALS go to the party, not the candidate.
** $3000 cap to be paid for each riding that qualifies regardless of the number of votes counted above 250.
* A party cap serves to make elections less dominated by parties with huge subsidies.
Advantages of Revised TABLE of subsidy support.
All candidates in every riding qualify for a subsidy, provided that a minimum threshold of votes is met to indicate some popular riding support.
Small and fledgling parties will receive enough funding to build more robust future campaigns.
Major parties will have only as much advantage as they have earned in past elections, and no more.
Big subsidies that bias elections will be a thing of the past, reducing skepticism and increasing trust by voters.
Party operations will be primarily financed by party memberships and voluntary donations, rather than by taxpayers‼️
Public calls for election reform, proportional representation, may be less vocal if the bias is removed from per vote subsidies. With 23 registered political parties who may benefit from this proposal, there are enough political platform choices to serve every elector interest.
2025 Election Results
From the image shown, do you own estimates as to where and how much your tax dollars will be going in the next four years. They say: “money wins elections…🥺”
This would be a step in the right direction.
ALL of our party leaders and most of the Premiers are Young Global Leaders.
