The Big Bang Theory is wrong.
The universe, as we experience it, originates from a “tiny, made idea”
The “tiny mad idea” concept comes from A Course in Miracles.
A Course in Miracles (ACIM) begins with the following words which I read for the first time nearly 30 years ago.
This is a course in miracles. It is a required course. Only the time you take it is voluntary. Free will does not mean that you can establish the curriculum. It means only that you may elect what you want to take at a given time.
The course does not aim at teaching the meaning of love, for that is beyond what can be taught. It does aim, however, at removing the blocks to the awareness of love’s presence, which is your natural inheritance. The opposite of love is fear, but what is all-encompassing can have no opposite.
This course can therefore be summed up very simply in this way:
Nothing real can be threatened.
Nothing unreal exists.
Herein lies the peace of God.
I have had a long time to think…
I have revisited the ideas in that book many times since the year I spent as an ACIM student. Those ideas have been percolating in my mind often, and I have since concluded that “reality” is truly not what it seems as the book suggests. It teaches that everything we perceive as our alleged “material universe” is actually an illusion that is manifested in consciousness.
Consciousness exists without mass, and beyond time and space. It is considered the realm of “God the Creator”.
According to ACIM, the “universe” began as “a tiny mad idea”. The instant this occurred, a duality emerged from the singularity of Consciousness - the Mind of God. That “tiny mad idea” was a second state of consciousness - a human being - that was created in the “image and likeness” of the Creator. The “universe” as we know it is a co-creation in Consciousness between the Creator and offspring.
I wrote the following passage about 10 years ago for my daughter who is an avid online gaming player. I dislike using the term “God” because it carries far too much baggage and confusion from virtually all of the world’s 4200 religions. However, since “God” is universally synonymous with “Creator” - it serves well as a proxy for other popular speech forms such as “Universal Consciousness”, “Creator of all things, “ Universal Mind”, “Heavenly Father”, “Yahweh”, “Supreme Being”, “The Almighty” and more. It is therefore suitable for my purpose in this essay.
God’s Video Game
God is Consciousness.
Consciousness is God.
Nothing exists but God.
Everything exists in Consciousness like a dream.
#
There is no space because space cannot exist in a dream.
There is no time if there is no space.
There is just Now, the dream and us — players in the game of Life.
#
We are the co-creators of Life.
God dreams the landscape, stage and circumstances of Life.
God creates and manifests each one of us as unique players in Life.
#
From “birth” into Life we co-create with God.
We each choose and develop unique abilities to play the game of Life.
Each endowed with free will and the ability to create,
We also choose our responses to Life’s circumstances.
#
Each player acquires Life experience and wisdom.
Sometimes we overcome a Life challenge. Sometimes we don’t. Inevitably we die.
But we all contribute wisdom to the game of Life
Wisdom is eternally safeguarded in the Mind of God.
#
Life experience generates eternal artifacts of consciousness.
They exist in the Mind of God.
These comprise God’s pallet, paints and brushes for Creation.
#
Wisdom is the distillation of all artifacts acquired in Life.
Creativity is the impulse to acquire more Wisdom.
Opportunities to gain Wisdom
Are the reason why players exist.
#
In Life, new players appear to replace old.
Each is a unique creation so as to produce original artifacts from Life.
In God’s Video Game, only two players exist in Mind …
God and his one other creation - us.
Comments.
Human beings have been enormously creative and adaptive throughout history.
Today’s computer gaming creators are an interesting manifestation of the impulse to create and adapt. Their creations emulate the game of Life using modern technology. In so doing, the play the part of “God” - to “dream the landscape, stage and circumstances” for their online version of Life. Those who play their games create their own unique avatars by choosing from a list of possible characteristics and powers supplied by the game’s creator. Every avatar engages the game with the free will of the player who participates in engaging with the landscape, stage and circumstances conceived by the creator. Over time, players mature - they acquire the experience to play the game more skillfully (wisdom).
Similarly, the game creators must evolve in order to meet the demands of a maturing community of gamers who seek greater opportunities to co-create. These game creators acquire their ‘wisdom’ to create better games from the feedback of the gaming community. In this manner, their creativity is inspired by an existential need to puzzle out new ways to keep players engaged, and motivated to keep playing. It is in this ‘dance’ between Creator and co-creators that the inspiration arises to imagine new paths to wisdom and fulfillment. It’s a feature of Life that is apparently “eternal” like “God”. This is the reason that game creators and co-creators exist at all.
Food for thought…
Did God create Life to fulfill an existential need to be entertained? Was it lonely and unfulfilling to be a singularity of Consciousness without anyone with whom to share?
Does this also explain why our human lives also feature a yearning for entertainment of a near infinitely variety of types? Is entertainment our existential reward for conquering the challenges that Life presents us?
