“The death of real journalism in Canada.”
A former senior CBC journalist tells her story …. cautiously.
Independent Journalism gets a new follower.
Dorothy is my 90 year-old mother-in-law. Recently, I introduced her to podcasts starting with Trish Wood Is Critical Episode 116 featuring a conversation with Marianne Klowak. A senior CBC journalist who quit her job last December, Marianne described the circumstances which led her to that decision after nearly three decades.
Marianne Klowak loved her CBC job. She was proud of the work she and her colleagues had done until a shift in editorial policy and work culture appeared somewhat abruptly after Covid began. Ms. Klowak had become increasingly alarmed and vocal about the way that the CBC’s editorial leaders were censoring all proposed essay topics which challenged the prevailing pandemic public health policies.
Marianne and Trish, also a former senior CBC journalist, both described the most important role of journalism in a free and democratic society as a means to present “truth to power”. In other words, great journalism is supposed to hold governments and corporations accountable for their actions on behalf of our citizens.
The evidence that the taxpayer-funded Canadian “public broadcaster” was beginning to fail the public in that role became too evident to ignore. “Who was holding the CBC accountable to the public?” Marianne had begun to ask. This led to her to be “cancelled” as a trusted and compliant journalist by her CBC superiors.
Marianne lived through the period when the CBC became increasingly aligned with the official narratives endorsed by the Liberal government. She now claims to have witnessed “the death of real journalism in Canada.”
Dorothy wants more…
Dorothy is showing great interest in podcasts like this Trish Woods episode. She specifically asked if I am aware of any that offers a balanced discussion on Climate Change.
This morning, I searched for one and found pages of links to Climate Change alarmism published by activist enterprises and corporate media giants like Forbes, The New York Times and The Guardian. Where is the journalism that holds those media giants, the IPPC and national governments accountable to report both sides of the Climate Change debate?
Balance in todays News and Information?
My search, albeit brief, revealed how little exists to challenge the dominant Climate Change narrative. I have followed the real science on this topic ever since The Inconvenient Truth movie appeared and became quickly skeptical of the premises and claims being offered by mainstream corporate and government sources. The activists, politicians and other pundits ignored the fact that scientific progress only comes from rigorous research, analysis and reporting by qualified scientists in respectable journals. This fundamental truth of science was dismissed entirely in favour of an unscientific “consensus” claim.
Before Covid, I had found 3 Facebook groups that presented very good science on the Climate Change topic and I had read their content regularly (I have a degree in Science and training in Statistics and the scientific method). Those sites still exist but the information posted is much too sophisticated for a 90 year-old with no science background (She is a retired public school teacher with a degree in Sociology).
Recommendations are welcomed!
I am hoping to find an easy-listening podcast suitable for Dorothy that offers scientifically-sound counter-arguments to the prevailing doom&gloom narratives. The linked article from The Heartland Institute offers a sample of the kind of content I am seeking, but as a podcast which (ideally) presents on an A/V platform like YouTube, Rumble, Odysee or BitChute. An audio-only platform is also acceptable but would not be best given that much scientific content can be best understood visually.

"Full comment with Anthony Furey" is a good one. He is pretty balanced. He is a reporter with the National Post.
I have seen some good content from the Heartland Institute on YT.
Alex Epstein's "Moral Case for Fossil Fuels" is also good, although he seems to concede that there is a connection between climate change and CO2.
Canadian physicist Denis Rancourt is a global warming skeptic. Not sure if he has a platform on social media, but he has appeared on several discussions on YT.
