The Mystery of the Nature of God
Does is make sense to explain one mystery with another? Or with a series of contrived abstractions?
Mysteries are crucial to the existence of religion
The linked Catholic article is typical of the kinds of investigations that I encountered
in my past when I still considered myself as a Roman Catholic. The discussion inevitably became either very abstract or very much based on interpretation of passages from the Bible. The explanations never satisfied me nor did they engender the sense of awe and wonder that such teachings were intended to inspire in believers.
The Holy Trinity was one such abstraction. As a concept, it had no basis in the concrete reality which every human encounters in every instant of their life. Of course, how could it when God was alleged to exist beyond time, space and matter? The soul, our sins and heaven are also constructs that are alleged to exist beyond time, space and matter. Ironically, so do human consciousness and dreams.
Or is that actually irony?
Maybe when religious scholars say the we were created in the image and likeness of God, consciousness is the “stuff” of life and creation that we share will the Creator. Maybe images of God and Jesus as men have actually served to distract “the faithful” from the truth that we do not exist in time, space or matter either. Instead, maybe we are vessels of pure consciousness sharing a co-creative existence with an eternal singularity of Consciousness.
Can this means mean that we are a dream?
Is every thought, feeling, sense and image that we experience are actually elements of a dream? Do we share these with all sentient beings who exist beyond time, space and matter too? Can this explain why Albert Einstein, and every other scientist, failed to define a Unified Field Theory because Consciousness cannot be prodded, poked or measured if it doesn’t exist in time, space or matter? Can infinitely be understood from the vantage point of Consciousness and it’s powers of creativity?
I ask these questions, and more, because they pose a completely different paradigm within which for thinkers to explore some of the most intractable and elusive subjects that mankind has faced with respect to our nature and the “world” we inhabit. I wish that Dr. Jordan Peterson would explore this line of thinking but I doubt that he has any motivation to do so. Maybe others will… maybe you?
A disconcerting step to take - be prepared.
If you read the linked article, try to see it through the lens of understanding dreams rather that from the perspective of someone who has always believed without question that you are a human being existing in time, space and matter. Spend some time quietly thinking about your true nature and that of your Creator.
If you are anything like me when I first started going down this rabbit hole some 25 years ago, I suspect the you may be startled by the strength of inner resistance that you are sure to encounter in this meditation.
Enjoy.
Thank you for this thought provoking article and link, Gene.
The Trinity is both question and answer. It is an awe inspiring and satisfying rabbit hole, indeed. As is the model of our atom, reflected and repeated throughout our solar system.
I believe that the more thoroughly we examine our universe (and selves) the closer we come to understanding God through His design.
After all …using the standard investigative format W5H the explanation is laid out in the first ten words of Genesis
Who - God
What - Created
Where -Heavens and Earth
When - In the beginning
To find out Why and How - we need only to keep reading and observing.
And believing , of course, one can’t leave Faith out of the equation. Faith is the substance of things unseen. The building block of our soul.
Imo Consciousness does exist in a timeline where the being is conscious about their consciousness. Time is technically an abstraction humans use to measure distance between events, we observe time through our consciousness.
At least that’s how I perceive the subject currently.
God, another invention by man to wage fear among the timid and lawful limitation among the ambitious.
A wise man once told me that if you need something outside of yourself to make you be a good person then your not.
Life has so many twists and turns we hardly realize what we are while being awake, it takes deep reflection and contemplation to realize the important things in life.
