Tom Flanagan’s recollections of Bill Gairdner.
Bill was a great man in many ways. Tom shares a few memories to add to Bill’s legacy of accomplishments for Canadians to enjoy and celebrate.

It is fitting that the Epoch Times would be first out the gate of news outlets to publish a brief celebration of Bill Gairdner’s life, and that Tom Flanagan would be the author. Enjoy,
As you can see from the photo, Bill always had a twinkle in his eye. As a member of Bill’s Free Thinkers group and Civitas, I received an invitation to attend his Celebration of Life on Saturday. What a life to celebrate !!
PS. A Note from Civitas Canada
On January 12th, 2024, Canada lost a fearless writer, creative mind, and accomplished athlete.
The founder of Civitas Canada, William Douglas Gairdner (or as we knew him, Bill), has passed away at the age of 83.
Bill founded Civitas in 1996, seeing a need for an organization in Canada that brings together conservatives, classical liberals, and libertarians so they can hash out public policy debates amongst one another.
Bill served as a guide for the organization up until his last days.
We will remember Bill as a prolific author and essayist; Olympic athlete; professor of English; independent scholar; and the man who started Civitas Canada.
Civitas will carry on William Gairdner’s legacy, fulfilling his wishes to have a forum for the freedom-minded citizens of this country.
Sincerely,
The Civitas Canada Board of Directors
