Electoral Democracy is failing miserably. It may have been the best way to engage citizens in public affairs in the 20th century, but it should follow the destiny of the 8-track cassette!
Gene, what you write here makes WAY TOO MUCH SENSE for our government to follow. It is my humble opinion that they want us all to think that we have a voice in "the illusion" that what we say matters, but it really never has. That is why all the Western Countries are corporations to collect taxes to give to our King Charles on every purchase we make, in order to live on a purchased property, to be able to drive anywhere and now the darn Carbon tax to breath, next is the water tax....all these taxes....we are all "serfs" .... why else would we work half the year to pay our taxes?
It would be nice if there was an "opt in" for the 50+ billion dollars in subsidies that the Canadian government has committed to a few companies to manufacture EV batteries. I don't ever recall the government subsidizing the manufacture of vehicle gas tanks or any other commercial product to this prodigious extent in the past. The free market used to take care of that.
With hundreds of billions of dollars floating about on Bay Street looking for viable investments to fund, why is it necessary for the Canadian government to gamble with the money earned and remitted by taxpayers? If everyone truly believed the climate narrative, and that EVs were a viable solution, wouldn't every Canadian investor want to get in on the action? That would be an honest barometer of Canadians' willingness to "opt in" on this venture.
I agree with your perspective but laws laws, regulations and taxes have been established on the assumption of OPT IN for everyone with no option to OPT OUT.
The only way to cancel the OPT IN assumption is to repeal the laws of cancel the regulations that exist, and the only ppl who have the power to do this are elected representatives and unelected government officials. The ability to OPT OUT will give the average Canadian the ability to take some of the “monopoly power” out of the hands of those “strangers-with-too-much-power” and place it in the hands of the only people who must live with the consequences of “OPT IN mandates”.

Very interesting concept. Apply the laws of supply and demand to government. I like it.

Very interesting concept! Wonder if you want to run and make the changes. We need SOMEBODY sane!
